Doctor Lauris Johnson is proud to welcome you to MyFamily Orthodontics! She is passionate about helping her patients achieve beautiful smiles and improving their oral health.
She earned her Orthodontic Certification from the University of Colorado in 2007 and her Doctorate Degree in Dentistry from Nova Southeastern University. She is the proud granddaughter of Tuskegee University graduates that go back two generations. Her grandmother and grandfather as well as both of her parents attended the HBCU. Although she would forge a new path at the University of Florida; she graduated with honors with a major in Zoology following in the footsteps of her father before deciding she wanted to pursue dental school.
Throughout her career, she has exhibited a genuine passion for helping others and trying to understand their needs. As a dental student at Nova Southeastern University, she found herself driven to expand on the knowledge and experience she had gained and ultimately elected to specialize in Orthodontics.
She is a native Floridian and a proud resident of Orlando, FL. Throughout the years, she has been an active Board Member with the YMCA serving at the Roper YMCA in Winter Garden and currently at the Dr. Phillips YMCA in Orlando. Always an advocate for education, it’s not uncommon to find her or her staff supporting a school event in the area. In her spare time, she and her family like to travel and spend quality time together, attending church, participating in all things Disney, or going to a Farmers Market on the weekend.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a visit to the orthodontist at age 7 as this is when they have a good mix of baby and adult teeth but also have a lot of growing left to do. If a child is older than 7 and has yet to see an orthodontist, schedule their visit now.
In most cases, they are genetic. However, habits can cause them or make them worse. Things like thumb sucking, overuse of pacifiers, poor diet, and poor oral hygiene can all contribute to them.
To determine if your child needs treatment, we will use diagnostic procedures such as panoramic x-rays, bite impressions, and computer generated models of the head, neck, and jaw. Based on these, we will settle on the best methods of treatment. In most cases, this will involve braces alone, but other appliances may also be needed.

Traditional braces are usually the treatment of choice for the majority of orthodontic problems. The most common age range for orthodontic treatment is 12 to 15 years. By age 12, most permanent teeth have erupted, and crooked teeth, gaps, and bite issues are easy to identify. These problems will likely not improve without orthodontic intervention.
Teenagers who eat right, practice good dental hygiene, and follow all instructions typically complete treatment on time (generally 1 to 3 years). Once the braces are removed, a retainer is worn to ‘retain’ the beautiful, healthy smile you worked so hard to get!
For most teenagers, this is a time when many of their friends are also undergoing orthodontic treatment. This may help put them at ease and feel better about wearing braces. Teenagers are also still growing. Orthodontists can take advantage of this growth to help move the teeth and correct the bite and alignment.

Growth: Because we cannot harness bone growth to tailor results, we may need to consider things like pulling teeth or surgery.
Health : Adults are more likely to have health conditions, gum disease, and tooth decay than children and teens, which can impact care.
